Current climate change has major implications for the frequency and intensity of floods throughout the world. Rising global temperatures, resulting from greenhouse gas emissions, are causing a variety of extreme weather phenomena, including greater rainfall and the development of unpredictable weather patterns. This underlies the increase in flood risk in various areas, both those that were not previously vulnerable to floods and those that are used to facing them. One of the most significant impacts of climate change is the increasing frequency of heavy rain. According to a report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), global rainfall is increasing, especially in tropical and subtropical areas. More intense rain means existing drainage systems are unable to manage water effectively, thereby increasing the risk of flooding. Additionally, rising temperatures cause melting of polar ice and glaciers, contributing to sea level rise. Coastal areas, already vulnerable to flooding, face the additional threat of tidal flooding. Rising sea levels exacerbate flooding events, especially when high tides occur along with storms. This creates a scenario where coastal communities are forced to adapt or migrate due to loss of homes and livelihoods. Changing river flow patterns also create new challenges. Some areas experience increased water flows, while others may face reduced water flows affecting drinking water supplies. With climate change, river flow changes due to various factors, including lower soil absorption due to reduced vegetation generation, as well as reduction in river area due to widening of the agricultural surface. The impact of flooding is also visible in significant economic losses. Damaged infrastructure, lost agricultural yields, and recovery costs can reach billions of dollars. In developing countries, where resources are limited, these impacts are more severe, destabilizing food security and worsening people’s socio-economic status. Communities that are typically more vulnerable, such as residents in remote and low-income areas, are particularly affected by climate change. Mitigation and adaptation are becoming increasingly important in overcoming the impacts of flooding due to climate change. Building environmentally friendly infrastructure, such as rain gardens and modern drainage systems, helps reduce the risk of flooding. Rainwater absorption and ecosystem rehabilitation strategies, such as wetland restoration, also contribute to absorbing excess water and improving water quality. Climate change affects every corner of the world, and its impact on flood frequency is one of the most pressing issues. With collaborative efforts from the government, non-governmental organizations and the community, it is hoped that effective solutions can be realized to overcome the increasing frequency of flooding due to climate change.
